"Spreading the love of the church and our gifts from God to those in need in the community"

The Social Ministry Team sponsors a variety of activities throughout the calendar year. These currently include "SoBER Sunday" (a monthly canned goods collection on behalf of South Baltimore Emergency Relief, a non-profit social ministry agency in our community), a school supply drive, a hat/mitten tree and a Christmas Toy collection on behalf of our neighborhood schools. Here's what's been going on lately.....

"HAMS FOR THE HUNGRY"

Salem sponsors an annual spring drive to collect canned hams for distribution by SoBER to those in need in our community. Click here for information about this year's effort.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES

Pastor Barbara delivered a trunk-load of school supplies to Thomas Johnson Elementary, where they were gratefully received.

SOUTH BALTIMORE STATION

We are also collecting toiletries for residents at South Baltimore Station, a facility offering transitional housing for men. Salem is partnering with Church of the Advent to provide a meal at South Baltimore Station on the fourth Monday of every month. Please contact the church office if you are interested in joining this monthly ministry.

SOUTH BALTIMORE EMERGENCY RELIEF

We have purchased a large container for collection of food in the office entrance foyer. We are excited about expanding our ministry to SoBER by inviting neighbors to participate. We also have a "Men's Glove Tree" for donations of men's gloves for those in need as the cold weather approaches.

WORLD HUNGER

We participated in the church-wide ministry of feeding hungry people by observing World Hunger Sunday on November 15th. Thus far we have been able to send $500 to ELCA World Hunger.

ALTERNATIVE GIFT GIVING/CHRISTMAS PROJECTS

The Social Ministry team has selected the following two projects as congregational initiatives for 2009:

bulletResidents of Augsburg Lutheran Home -- A $20 donation provides for purchase of a present for someone who might not get anything else. These donations may be sent directly to: Augsburg Lutheran Home, ATTN Betty Ireland, 6811 Campfield Road, Baltimore, MD 21207
bulletGod's Global Barnyard -- A project of ELCA World Hunger, God's Global Barnyard provides funding for purchase of animals that help communities support themselves. In 2009 Salem collected $360 toward this effort.
