This October -- CHRISTIANITY FOR THE REST OF US A book by Diane Butler Bass In the book, Bass explores the widespread decline of "mainline" denominations, including Lutheran. She challenges the idea, also widespread, that congregations like ours are losing ground because we are not following the model of more rapidly growing evangelical churches. Instead, she selects ten neighborhood congregations in denominations like ours, congregations that are thriving. Bass identifies the practices that make the difference, including hospitality, lively discussions of faith, social ministry, and passionate worship. Are you excited about some of the things we are doing at Salem? Concerned about the future of our congregation and others like us? Curious about what works for other congregations like ours? Listening for the Spirit's leading for our life together? Then this discussion is for you! To encourage the widest possible participation, we are offering several different days and time to gather. Weekly small group discussions -- Tuesday evenings from 7:00 -- 8:30 PM (October 5, 12, 19 and 28) OR Sunday mornings from 8:45 -- 9:45 (October 10, 17, 25 and 31 Single discussion -- Thursday, October 14th from 6:30 -- 8:30 PM OR Saturday, October 16th from 10:00 AM -- noon
If you would like to discuss these issues but aren't sure you can commit to reading the book, then you're still invited; summaries will be given and discussion will be organized so you can easily participate.
